This product is actually advertised as a deep dish pizza pan or cake pan, NOT a drip pan. But since it is the perfect size for a Big Green Egg Drip Pan, I have adapted it for that use. I will refer to the product as a drip pan for the rest of the post.
This drip pan is intended for use with the Large Big Green Egg and Plate Setter. If you intend to purchase one of these drip pans, make sure it is the correct size for your Egg!
The drip pan measures 16″ in diameter and 2″ tall. It is made from aluminum and weighs 1.2 pounds. This drip pan will fit pretty much perfectly inside your Plate Setter and will hold nearly 2 gallons of water.
Why I Bought My Drip Pan:
I bought this round drip pan because I was frustrated with rectangular drip pans. My Big Green Egg and Plate Setter are round, why are all the drip pans rectangular? This really annoyed me when I cooked pork shoulders or briskets. These large cuts of meat are not always perfectly rectangular, and so it was impossible to make sure the drip pan would be under the entire cut of meat. This problem does not exist with the round drip pan. As long as the meat is on the grill, it is protected by the drip pan.
What’s Good About the Round Drip Pan:
The size of this drip pan is perfect for a Large BGE. It fits right in the Large BGE Plate Setter, allowing more of your grill to be protected by the drip pan. Ultimately this reduces flare-ups and allows you to collect all of those tasty drippings.
If you are using the drip pan as a water pan (ie, heat sink), its size is big enough that it does not need to be refilled during longer cooks.
Also, since the pan is made of aluminum it should not rust as long as you take care of it. I have had my drip pan for over two years and it’s still going strong. I simply line it with foil each time I use it (which also makes clean up easier).
What’s Not So Good About the Round Drip Pan:
I don’t have any complaints about this product. It doesn’t need to do much other than sit there and hold water, which it does well.
