I purchased a SmokeWare SS Vented Chimney Cap to replace my Daisy Wheel. Supposedly this new cap will never fall off, rust, or break. It also has a covered top, allowing you to grill in the rain or snow! Check out my full review of the SS Vented Chimney Cap here.
After purchasing the Vented Chimney Cap, I learned there are actually installation instructions. Since this site is meant to help everyone with their Big Green Egg, I figured I should share my installation experience. Overall, it was very simple process, and I will go through it step-by-step:
Clean the Top Rim of the BGE
After removing the Daisy Wheel, there will likely be some built up grease or gunk around the chimney of your BGE. In order for the included gasket to adhere to the Egg, it must be clean. So take a rag and some rubbing alcohol and scrub the surface of the Egg clean. Wipe dry with a clean cloth.
Attach the Gasket to the BGE
After cleaning the chimney surface of the BGE with rubbing alcohol, you need to attach the gasket to the Egg. Peel the white paper backing from the gasket, and install the gasket just slightly below the top rim of the chimney (about 1/8 of an inch). Similar to installing a self-stick Nomex gasket for your lid, do not stretch the gasket as you install it! Be sure to apply pressure as you install the gasket, so that it gets a good stick.
Trim the Excess
The SmokeWare SS Vented Chimney Cap comes with a 17 inch long piece of gasket, which is too long. As you install the gasket to the chimney, trim the excess and try to make sure there is no gap between the ends! The gasket makes sure that Vented Cap stays put when you open the Egg, and also ensures the only top portion of the Cap is used for venting.
Install the Flared Base
After installing the gasket, take the flared base and slide it over the gasket (flared-side down). Be sure to push it all the way down so that the flared edge is touching the Egg. It will fit a little tight so be persistent. I had to gently tap mine into place with a rubber mallet.
Install the Top Cap
After installing the Flared Base, simply slide the Top Cap into place. You’re all done and ready to grill (rain or shine)! I must admit, I really like the way the stainless steel looks on the BGE. A true upgrade from the cast iron Daisy Wheel.
Here is a link with to the manufacturer’s website with the official installation instructions!
Hopefully you are able to install your BBQ Smokeware Stainless Steel Vented Chimney Cap with no problems. If you have any questions at all, you can feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer.
