“The Perforated Cooking Grids allow heat and flavor to reach the food and make it easy to cook fish or small foods like mushrooms, shrimp or scallops that might fall through the standard cooking grids.”
The Big Green Egg Perforated Grids come in several shapes and sizes to meet your grilling needs. There are round grids, rectangle grids, square grids, and half moon grids to fit all sizes of Eggs so it should be easy to find what you’re looking for. The grids are porcelain coated steel to prevent rusting. Round grids and half moon grids do NOT have handles (as far as I know), but rectangular grids do.
Why I Bought My Big Green Egg Perforated Grid:
As much as I enjoy grilling meat on my Big Green Egg, every now and then I get in the mood for grilled vegetables. If you have never had grilled vegetables on the Big Green Egg, you are missing out because they are incredible (eggplant and portabella mushrooms are my favorites). But trying to grill chopped vegetables without the Perforated Grid is a disaster and the food will inevitably be lost between the grates. The Perforated Grid solves the problem perfectly, and it allows you to grill your favorite veggies (or other small food like shrimp) without the food falling between the grates. Like the Plate Setter, I consider the perforated grid to be a necessary accessory because you really can’t cook veggies without it.
What’s Good About The Big Green Egg Perforated Grid:
The Perforated Grid allows you use your Big Green Egg to cook amazing vegetables, that much is obvious. Each grid is high quality porcelain coated and should last a lifetime with regular use and care. I have owned mine for two years, and with regular use it is showing no significant signs of wear. The best part about the Perforated Grids is that there are different sizes to choose from, the “Full Moon,” “Half Moon,” or the “Rectangular Grid.” The “Full Moon” is a circular grid that will cover the entire cooking surface of your Egg and allow you to cook a lot of veggies at once. The “Half Moon” is a semi-circle grid that covers half of your grilling surface, leaving the other half available for direct grilling. I own the “Half Moon” Grid for exactly that reason; I usually grill salmon filets on one half and asparagus on the other half for a complete meal cooking only on the Egg. The Rectangular Grid fits on the Extra Large and Large Eggs, and it allows maximum cooking area for vegetables. All of the Perforated Grids are dishwasher safe, so clean up is a breeze.
What’s Not So Good About The Big Green Egg Perforated Grid:
I only have one complaint about the Perforated Grid. There’s no easy way to pick it up once it’s on the grill! I really wish there was a small handle or grip so that I could just pick up the grid when I’m done cooking. Instead, I have to use a spatula or tongs to pick up the vegetables from the grid while it is still on the grill. Maybe it’s a minor complaint, but my life would be much easier if I could just pick the Perforated Grid right up off the grill and slide my food on to a serving dish. If you own a Rectangular Grid this shouldn’t be a problem because there are small grips on either side of the Grid.
